Challenge

Skanderborg Municipality provides IT infrastructure and digital services to around 6,000 users across the local area. Stability and security are top priorities, as the municipality is responsible for managing sensitive public data.

In 2016, the organisation needed to vacate its previous premises and chose not to invest in a new in-house data centre.

“The costs of building and maintaining our own modern facility would have been too high. It was a better option to find a local housing provider that met our technical and organisational requirements”, says Anders Fihl, IT manager at Skanderborg Municipality.

Solution

Today, Skanderborg Municipality houses its servers in four racks at a local Kolo facility, located close to the municipal headquarters. The solution includes space, power and physical security, while all hardware and IT operations are managed by the municipality’s in-house team.

“We only buy the housing – the racks and the power. Everything else is our responsibility. We visit the data centre ourselves whenever we install or upgrade equipment”, says Anders Fihl.

Proximity is a key factor.

“Our team needs direct access, and we want to keep our data physically close. It’s also part of our GDPR and cybersecurity strategy to maintain clear control over where and how our data is handled.”

The facility itself meets both practical and strategic needs. A meeting room is available for Skanderborg’s technicians when they visit to configure servers.

“There is a high level of security and the building offers a pleasant working environment during visits.”

Kolo’s infrastructure helps support the municipality’s long-term digital ambitions, including potential future expansion.

“We are not scaling up right now, but as we begin working with AI and new technologies, we may need to. Kolo enables that option.”
