Challenge

R8 Technologies is an Estonian software company that helps commercial real estate clients reduce energy costs and improve indoor climate through automated building control. By continuously analysing building data, they can adjust settings in real time – often reducing energy consumption by up to 20 per cent.

Initially, their infrastructure was hosted at a data centre near Tallinn. However, to reduce risk and ensure business continuity for clients, they needed a secondary location in Western Europe.

“Amsterdam is a major hub for data communications, so the Netherlands made sense,” says Madis Võrklaev, IT Infrastructure Manager at R8 Technologies.

The new data centre had to meet strict requirements for physical security, connectivity, and compliance – particularly ISO 27001 certification. It also needed to support R8 Technologies’ plans for continued international expansion.

R8 Technologies chose Kolo based on its location, certifications, connectivity, and pricing – all of which aligned with their technical and strategic needs. The decision was made in 2022, and Kolo has served as the company’s hub in the Netherlands ever since.

“The migration went smoothly. Kolo led the project and communicated clearly throughout. I always knew what was happening and when to expect the service to be back up.”

A critical factor in the move was preserving IP addresses – something Kolo made possible, even though it’s not standard practice.

“That saved us a huge amount of time and hassle. Changing IPs would have meant reconfiguring VPNs with every client, and some of them are hard to reach.”

Physical access and support have also met expectations. While the team rarely needs remote hands, they’ve found the service to be quick and professional.

“If Kolo has ever had downtime, we haven’t noticed. Everything just works, and that’s exactly how it should be.”

“I’ve never even visited the site. We just shipped our equipment, and the team set everything up exactly according to our specifications”, says Madis Võrklaev.
