Europcar Denmark

When Europcar Denmark needed to modernise their IT operations, they turned to Kolo. The result: reliable uptime, full control, and peace of mind for a fast-paced business.

Europcar is Denmark’s leading rental car company, with more than 70 years in the market, nationwide coverage, and a fleet ranging from cars to buses and trucks. The IT department is responsible for both compliance and daily operations — from maintaining the website to enabling fast, responsive customer service.

Challenge

Before partnering with Kolo in 2019, Europcar hosted its systems in-house at a single location. The setup relied on ageing equipment and lacked the resilience and redundancy needed to meet modern requirements.

“We were spending a lot of effort just to keep the network stable,” says Michael Ebenhardt Kristensen, IT manager at Europcar.

The company needed a more reliable solution that would enable them to provide fast, uninterrupted service to clients around the clock.

Solution

Europcar now runs a colocation solution with two full racks in two different Kolo locations. They manage their own equipment while relying on Kolo for critical infrastructure such as power, backup, physical and cyber security, and connectivity.

One reason Europcar selected Kolo as their partner is the high level of security Kolo provides. Another is Kolo’s strict compliance with European cybersecurity regulations.

“The baseline security — power supply, fire protection, resilience, cyber security — is excellent. And the transparency around compliance and GDPR is something we really value.”

The solution offers a high degree of flexibility for Europcar, allowing them to adapt more quickly to user needs.

Recently, Europcar replaced the old hosting environment for its virtual servers.

“It was quite easy, we just went in and changed the server. The network and the security are already in place as a part of the baseline. We don’t have to think about it. And most of the work is done remotely.”

Result

The transition to Kolo has improved uptime, performance, and internal efficiency.

“Working with Kolo has had a major impact on our resilience, stability, and security.  If you don’t hear about IT, it’s running smoothly – and that’s exactly what we have with Kolo. I can’t think of a single technical issue we’ve had”, says Michael Ebenhardt Kristensen.

With day-to-day operations running smoothly, the IT team can now focus on development and long-term improvements rather than firefighting.

“Kolo is responsive to our needs and flexible when it comes to changes and special requests. Their technical staff is available, competent, and solution-oriented. We also appreciate that Kolo is proactive and reminds us about important tasks like reviewing access lists.”

The new setup gives Europcar full control and fast response times. Instead of relying on a cloud provider to make changes, Europcar handles its systems directly.

“This gives us speed, flexibility, and also more responsibility, which our staff enjoys.”

As a next step, Michael Ebenhardt Kristensen plans to develop one of the colocation sites – currently a “cold site”– into a “warm site” to enable faster disaster recovery.

“At the moment, the hardware is there, but not active. In the future, we want to be able to start up within hours if needed.”
